1. Open a bank account in your name, in the nearest city.
2. Have money transferred from the US to this account.
Easy so far, right?
3. Drive 40 minutes to the bank to withdraw money.
This is where it gets complicated.
4. Banker needs a document proving that you live in your house.
What does this have to do with my money in an account with my name? You have my passport right there to prove who I am. What does my house have to do with this?
5. Drive 40 minutes back home to go to city hall and speak with the mayor’s secretary.
6. She sends you to the councilwoman for your neighborhood, 3 houses from yours.
7. The councilwoman doesn’t have the proper forms. She sends you back to city hall to retrieve a form.
8. Get form from city hall, and get an extra copy, just in case.
9. Go back to councilwoman’s house, where she fills out form.
Confused yet? Hold on, it gets worse.
10. She needs 2 of your neighbors to witness it, so you go knocking on gates to ask if anyone is willing to verify that you live next door.
11. Wait for neighbor to change into a suit, because he is walking 4 houses down the block to sign his name.
12. Councilwoman keeps your extra form. Go to a copy center and get a couple copies of the completed form, just in case
13. Return to city hall
13. Go to one office to get form stamped. They send you to another office.
14. Finally, the form is stamped and official, so you drive 40 minutes back to the bank.
15. Banker looks at form and says, “They have the street, but the didn’t fill out the town name.”
Grrrr. Thankfully, he is a kind soul and just has someone write it in. He would be within his rights to send you back to begin the entire process over again.
16. Wait 24 to 48 hours to pick up money.
Governmental red tape at it’s finest! So….what was that money for again? :~)
